LOS ANGELES — Last weekend, Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez and Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, in partnership with Healing Urban Barrios, were joined by community members, local organizations, and small businesses to host the second annual Lincoln Heights Back-to-School Giveaway and Resource Fair on Broadway. The celebration turned a key Lincoln Heights corridor into a walkable public space, bringing together live music, a lowrider and classic car show, cultural activities, and more than 30 resource booths to equip students for the year ahead.

“Back to School should be a time of joy and excitement for students, and our community came together to create a safe, fun atmosphere to welcome young people back and kick the school year off right,” said Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez. “I’m grateful for all of the City departments, community organizations, small businesses, and vendors who came together to make this happen, and we can’t wait to do it again next year.”

This year’s giveaway provided 1,439 backpacks filled with school supplies, hundreds of toys and gift cards, and free haircuts from Luxcy Hair Studio, Family Cuts, Super Blends, Rick’s Old School Barber Shop, and Rudy Guardado. Families also enjoyed crafts with Create Now, skateboarding lessons with the SK8 BRD BUS, chalk art with Avenue 50 Studio, and a merchant-and-food vendor marketplace.

“Today showed the best of Lincoln Heights,” said Councilmember Ysabel Jurado. “When city departments, community organizations, small businesses, and neighbors come together, we build strong neighborhoods and lay the foundation for the success of our youth.”

Councilmembers Hernandez and Jurado were joined by Los Angeles Unified School District Board Vice President Dr. Rocio Rivas, Memphis Perez of Toad’s Market and the Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council, Christina Navarro of Healing Urban Barrios, Felipe Radilla of Soledad Enrichment Action, and Crystal Rivera of LA Care. Together, they greeted neighbors, handed out backpacks, and visited local booths while joining in the day’s festivities.

Located in the heart of Lincoln Heights, North Broadway is a central business corridor and gathering place for local residents. The Lincoln Heights Back-to-School Giveaway is part of the Council offices’ broader commitment to strengthening local corridors through public events that connect residents to resources, create foot traffic for merchants, and celebrate the community’s cultural life.
